POLICE searched properties last night in three anti-terror raids. Officers in Greater Manchester raided two addresses in GreatWestern Street, Rusholme, and a third propertynearby, shortly before 8pm. The raids followed information provided after the arrest of a man.

Family Gives Go-Ahead for Peel Autobiography

THE autobiography of legendary Wirral-born DJ John Peel will be published next year. The broadcaster, pictured, left, after receiving his honorary degree from Liverpool University, had already written a substantial amount of the text before his sudden death in October. It was originally scheduled for publication next autumn, but the plans were put on hold until the wishes of his family were known.

AZZ musician George Melly is among eminent graduates who will return to the city this week to help launch a book celebrating 100 years of honorary degrees at the University of Liverpool. The book, entitled "Honoured by Degrees", is a collection of 100 fascinating biographic oratories selected from over 700 written for honorary degree recipients since the university was granted its Royal Charter in 1903.

KNIFE-WIELDING youths who murdered a wealthy financier and left his wife seriously injured in their home were being hunted by police last night. John and Homeyra Monckton were found by their nine-year-old daughter Isobel after the vicious attack at their elegant house in the wealthy London suburb of Chelsea on Monday night.

POLICE last night named a 15-year-old boy who died following a fight at school. David Thomas Sandham, from Partington, Greater Manchester, died at hospital after an 'altercation' at Broadoak High School, Warburton Lane, Partington.

Car Workers to Ballot On Strike Over Redundancies

VAUXHALL workers in Ellesmere Port are preparing to vote on strike action because of redundancies. The ballot of 2, 500 Transport and General Workers' Union members at the car plant will open on Thursday, and votes will be accepted until December 23.

Suicide Threat by Man On Rail Bridge

A 41-YEAR-OLD man threatened to throw himself off a footbridge over a railway line in Kirkby last night. The drama began at Headbolt Lane, Tower Hill, at 8. 30pm. Fire crews used an extended ladder to talk to the man, and he came down nearly an hour later.
