Claire in Tune with Firefighters' Charity ; Winning a Karaoke Competition Gave Singer Claire Poole the Chance to Help Others,As David Powell Discovers.

RHYL girl Claire Poole won a Karaoke competition in The Seagull Inn in Towyn and decided to donate pounds 100 of her pounds 250 prize to the Fire Service National Benevolent Fund. The sweet- voiced 18 -year-old sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow, covered most recently by Eva Cassidy,and Flashdance by Irene Cara. She made the selfless gesture because her uncle Raymond Olsen works in Merseyside Fire Service and she knows the good work that fire fighters do.

Football for Disabled

UP to 70 Denbighshire pupils will be putting their football skills to the test at a major tournament for the county's disabled students. The Disability Football Festival,organised by Disability Sport Cymru and the Football Association of Wales (FAW) Trust, takes place at Pengwern College,Rhuddlan tomorrow (Wed,March 31)between 1pm and 3pm.

TWO students at Coleg Llandrillo Cymru have been short listed for prestigious International Student Awards 2004,also known as the "Shine Awards". Mulham Alasfar,from Syria and Menekse Goker from Turkey have been short listed from over 2,000 entries. Mulham is studying for a GNVQ in Business and Menekse is following an HND programme in Hospitality Management at the Rhos-on-SeaCampus.

Obituary: Farewell to Real Gent Stan

STANLEY Frank Frost,known as Stan, was born in London on February 19,1916. He tragically lost his father, a stretcher bearer,in the last moments of the First World War in Prisau, France, on November 1,1918. Stan grew up with the love of his mother Jessie and brothers Bob,Arthur and Bert, and sisters Doris and Millicent.

BEAUTIFUL Naomi Rhianon Parker came into the world 17 days later than her due date. Born by Caesarian section, she is the first child of her delighted parents Jim, a musician,and Sarah, a designer. Naomi is also the first grandchild of Gareth and Sue Jones,of Glastonbury in Somerset. Gareth himself was born at Red Farm in Penmaenmawr in 1941 weighing 12 and a half lbs!

How We Met: Alice and Stanley Robinson of Colwyn Bay Post

ALICE and Stanley Robinson met while they were at Sunday School in Manchester in 1936. She was aged about 13 and he was a couple of years older when they were pupils at the Wesleyan Chapel Sunday School on Oldham Road in the Ardwick area of the city.

A NORTH Wales sailor was plucked to safety yesterday from angry seas which claimed the lives of 17 seamen. John Scragg, 22,of Bramble Way, Buckley, is grateful to be alive after he and a colleague were overturned five times in their 30ft yacht off the Cornish coast. He had been delivering a yacht from Milford Haven to Malaga.
