People Post: Blast From the Past: Brothers Made Good On Eastern Promise

THE success of four brothers who managed to expand from a shop in Caernarfon to one of the largest department stores in Egypt is a phenomenal tale of ability, desire and luck. People Post: Write a Caption

LAST week's People Post caption competition featured prime minister Tony Blair (below) meeting builders at a shared ownership scheme in West London. He said the government is trying to give everyone a chance to own their own home, be "independent and have a stake in society". The best caption came from Mrs E W Jones of Mynytho with "You have a half share? It could mean No 10 or No 11. Never!"

Tom Bodden: Capital Eye

TIME was that journalists and politicians might encounter dangerous liaisons in smoky bars at dead of night. Tasty tit bits of gossip and news value would be furtively exchanged over pie and chips and pints of bitter, or, if very late, a large glass of Scotch.

Obituary: Philip Johnson

THOSE anonymous glass sided skyscrapers, whose elegance merges into blandness, are the cathedrals of Mammon, where Capitalism has replaced religion, said art critic Kenneth Clarke. He was looking across the sky-line of central New York, the archetype of all cities dominated by commerce and finance, for his seminal television series, Civilization.

Our Man in Westminster: Work Incentives

HOW do you tempt a Merseysider back into the world of work after months, or even years, on benefits for a disability? That question will take central stage tomorrow when the Government unveils its latest plans for slashing the total of 2. 6m incapacity benefit (IB) claimants. Cost to the nation: pounds 12bn. Of course, not all of those 2. 6m live on Merseyside, but - together with the North East of England and South Wales - it is undoubtedly a hotspot.

Thought for the Day

YOU would be hard pushed to find many Biblical names of girls in the current top 20 list of the most popular names chosen by parents today. Some have religious connections but I think that only Hannah, which means "full of grace", at number 12, is the only true Biblical name.

Social Diary ; a Week in the Night Life of the North West

A NEW piece of art was launched by Loyd Grossman at the Radisson Hotel on Wednesday to mark the city's ethnic diversity. The Face of Liverpool surrounds Beetham Tower, the Radisson Hotel and the new Passport Offices on Old Hall Street and features the faces of 32 Liverpool residents. It was backed by the Beetham Organisation.

The Debate: Should We Have to Pay More for the Tunnels?: No: Road Users Already Pay Pounds 40bn to the Government

THE controversy over tolls has been around since before the first Mersey tunnel was built. In the early 1920s, the Government agreed to meet half the construction cost, on one condition - No Tolls! Eventually there was a compromise, and the tunnel was built at a cost of pounds 7m with a promise the tolls would be collected for a limited period only.

The Debate: Feed Back: Last Week's Question Asked: Does Liverpool Need an Elected Mayor?

THE people of Liverpool have already been asked whether or not they want a directly elected mayor in the form of a questionnaire which went out in 2001 and only 1% of the population bothered to reply. Why does Labour want to ask the same question again? Will they keep on asking it until they get the reply they want? LH, Kirkdale

The Debate: Should We Have to Pay More for the Tunnels? ; Chris Brown Looks at the Charging Controversy

THE news last week of an increase in the tolls for the Mersey Tunnels has again sparked controversy. Tunnels operator Merseytravel is increasing the amount it charges to cross between Liverpool and Wirral by 10p to pounds 1. 30.

Viva: I Spent Pounds 15, 000 to Look Like Zeta Jones ; Single Mum Esin Yurincis, 32, has Had a Boob Job, Eye Surgery, Collagen Inplants, a Facelift. . . All in a Bid to Mimic Her Idol. Here She Says Why

EIGHT out of 10 men that I meet say, "Has anyone ever told you that you look Zeta Jones?" I say, "Yes, but I don't have her bank balance!" I've also heard, "Can I be your Michael Douglas?" quite a few times. It's very flattering, because I love Catherine's style. But I didn't even know who she was until The Mask of Zorro came out in 1998. After that, I watched a couple of her other films and thought she was so cool.

The Debate: Should We Have to Pay More for the Tunnels?: Yes: Remove Payment, and People Will Return to Cars

IT IS a bitter pill to swallow personally, when, after two years of working very closely with the senior management of the tunnels, and bringing in the first reductions in charges and the congestion alleviating schemes, that they have to be announced on the same day the tolls are to rise by 10p for the average user. So, before I attempt to justify what in Merseyside amounts to heresy, let me take the opportunity to explain what we have been able to achieve since the passing of the Mersey Tunn...
