THE Government yesterday defended itself against claims that almost 45% of playing fields in England have been lost over the last 13 years. Sports minister Richard Caborn said he was determined to see the creation of more indoor and outdoor facilities but added that many young people now want to play on synthetic pitches. His comments came after the National Playing Fields Association (NPFA) said that nearly 34,000 pitches have disappeared since 1992.
