Letter: Post Soapbox - Worthless Cup?
I COULDN'T help feeling a tad smug on Sunday when Manchester United were 'bigging up' their win in Cardiff. It was a mere couple of seasons ago that they were calling it the Worthless Cup - and now they have taken a big step backwards and are celebrating like they've achieved something truly remarkable.
Letter: Don't Forget Our Mersey Success
PHIL REDMOND commends Ken Livingstone for his vision on looking out of his office window and, seeing the empty, unused waters of the Thames, declared that it should be used more for recreational purposes - which has come about. Phil then laments that this has not happened with the Mersey. But it has, Phil, it has.
I AGREE with Phil Redmond that not enough use is made of the mighty River Mersey. Every city I have visited with a central river or stretch of water, whether in Europe or farther afield, makes more day to day use of it than we do here. They have daily pleasure cruises, floating restaurants at nighttime and dinner dances, etc.
THIS is getting ridiculous. No Merseytram, no "Fourth Grace", no new museum, no new stadiums ... but we will have a world-class collection of building sites around Lime Street Station in 2008. Liverpool's becoming a laughing stock, and no amount of '08 propaganda will convince me otherwise. We need a Ken Livingstone/ Rudy Giuliani figure who'll shake up the council and knock heads together. Mancunians must be laughing their socks off.
IT IS a bit late for Ken Livingstone and his friends to complain about his being suspended for four weeks from his job as London's mayor. If he had been prepared to apologise for his outrageous and offensive remarks, none of this would have happened. But the pride of the man prevented him from doing so, even though he had been caught out red-handed. He has got off lightly, considering the reaction there would have been if the remarks he made had been offensive to Muslims, rather than Jews. Un...
WHILE not condoning the comments made by Ken Livingstone, I believe it flies in the face of democracy for him to have been suspended for making these remarks. The remarks were not made in an official capacity, he was out on the street for goodness' sake. Is he not allowed ever to express a private opinion or even anger because of his job?
THE ruling that Ken Livingstone is to be removed from office for a period of four weeks by an une-lected quango for no more that a few robust comments to a journalist who spoke to him at a party is, we believe, offensive to democracy. Unless Ken Livingstone committed an illegal act, the only people who should remove him are the voters of London.
RE: COMPENSATION Plan letter from J Cain (February 24). I agree that our litigation culture must be slowed down. However, to single out the Alder Hey bereaved parents is hurtful and unfeeling.
THE Waterloo Residents Association is compiling information relating to the public right of way footpath at Seaforth Docks. We are asking all individuals, clubs, organisations and groups to get in touch with details of dates the footpath was used (approximate dates will suffice) and the number of people who walked the right of way on that occasion. In particular, we are interested in the use of the right of way during the last three years.
AS A former resident of Cheshire, I must correct John Hobb (Daily Post, February 22) on the proposed re-instatement of the Halton curve. After the re-organisation of local government 1974, Cheshire County Council set up a working party to look into ways of improving public transport facilities within the county, including improved rail links with Mersey-side.
IT IS horrifying that metric campaigners are calling for road signs to be converted from miles to kilometres. This would be an appalling step which would confuse and anger many road users. While some people in the UK are conversant with kilometres, everyone knows where they are with miles. As well as being a colossal waste of taxpayers' money, such a move would represent another step in the creeping "EU-isation" of the UK, which has been taking place without anyone having a say in the matter.
RE: ASDA wedding dresses. Oxfam at Heswall have been selling ex- display/sample wedding dresses for the past two years. They cannot do them for pounds 60, but come a close second at pounds 80 - pounds 140. Some of the dresses have pounds 800 tags on them.
MAY I thank the kind person who took the trouble to move my son's coat and gloves safely away from the beach at Meloncroft Drive, Caldy, where he left them last night. It meant that my mad dash to the beach this morning - where I expected to find nothing - left me with renewed faith in the thought- fulness of others.
Letter: Post Soapbox - Morientes Worry
I'M concerned Benitez appears to be a bit biased towards Nando and it does seem unfair that Cisse hasn't been given a run of games when others are not performing. Saying that, I trust Rafa to replace Nando if he doesn't improve just like he replaced Josemi with Kromkamp.
Letter: Post Soapbox - Lay Off Nando
I CAN'T believe the criticism being aimed at Morientes. While I realise he is taking time to settle and hasn't scored the amount for goals we thought he was capable of, he is still a class act. He has proven that - and will prove it again. We need to give him more time and he will prove himself a world-beater.
Letter: Post Soapbox - Corner Practise
DO Liverpool not work on corners in training? It's incredible all the corners we get and we rarely take advantage. You'd think we would when we have the tallest player in the league plus the likes of Hyppia, Carragher etc, and yet more often than not they're wasted with silly short passes or headers completely off target.
Letter: Post Soapbox - Strange Choice
WHY on earth was James McFadden not in the starting line-up on Saturday? Up until the unfortunate early substitution against Blackburn, he had been forming a very nice little partnership with Beattie up front. However, that was soon curtailed on Saturday.
