Comment & Analysis: Charles Smith

JAZZ rhythms stirred the blood of the boys and they played with some great men including the tenor saxophonist Pharaoh Sanders, but the music of their upbringing didn't roll the tills, so they switched to R&B and then the disco sound, scoring a series of big hits. At the heart of Kool and the Gang was Claydes Charles Smith, lead guitarist and composer.

Comment & Analysis: A Paradise Lost ; in the Council Chamber

REMEMBER the Cavern Club, the original one I mean, in Mathew Street? It went to make way for Merseyrail. What about the beautiful old St John's Market, bulldozed to pave the way for St John's Centre, Liverpool's first concrete shopping c at h e d r a l ?

Comment & Analysis: Thought for the Day

WE LIVE in yet another age of idolatry. From time immemorial, people have had their idols. Our modern generation might well laugh at those previous generations that bowed down before trees and such like, or created images of wood, stone or metal and then fell on their faces and worshipped them. Today's idols are not made of wood, stone or metal but of flesh and blood and some might add that "they are made of money". These are the film, football and pop stars worshipped by so many today. Unlik...

A Melancholy Night but Not for Long ; Summer Pops Pet Shop Boys/ Central Docks

IF ANYONE wanted proof that the Pet Shop Boys are past masters of epic, melancholy pop, they need look no further than the fact that the BBC chose to play one of their songs, Numb, after England crashed out of the World Cup on Saturday. The duo's music has always been the natural soundtrack to these crying-in-your-beer moments, with Neil Tennant's plaintive vocals soaring above the dramatic, orchestral sweep of Chris Lowe's synths. In the wake of yet another World Cup debacle, the timing of t...

Give Us a Job If You're Brave Enough ; He Was the Man Behind Many Shows in the Golden Age of Television Drama. Philip Key Meets Alan Bleasdale

DO YOU remember Alan Bleasdale? There was a time when his television dramas were real events, gritty, complex series that would run over several episodes and tackle a host of social problems. THE controversial "butchers" photograph which caused outrage when it was used for one of the Beatles' album covers in the 1960s has gone on exhibition at London's National Portrait Gallery. It showed the Fab Four as butchers, complete with raw meat and decapitated plastic babies. The cover went out on their 1966 American album Yesterday and Toda, y and was believed to be as a protest against the US record label's insistence on cherry-picking The Beatles' songs and creating albums of their own...

Would You Credit It?

THE way consumers pay for things has undergone a revolution since the first credit cards were introduced in 1966. Forty years ago the vast majority of people used cash to pay for everything, with just one in four Britons even having a current account. Instead most people were paid in cash and used cash for all their purchases.

AVE our hospital," says a leaflet currently circulating in Llandudno, the fastest-growing town in North Wales. I have both a 1969 and a 1985 leaflet saying exactly the same thing. The 1985 leaflet points out that Llandudno General Hospital lost its obstetrics unit in 1957, its ear, nose and throat surgery in 1973, its orthopaedic surgery in 1980, and its SRN training school in 1985.
