Drivers May Face Tolls to Avoid M62 Gridlock ; Exclusive Proposal to Tackle Motorway Congestion

ROAD charging should be introduced to cut congestion on the M62 between Liverpool and Manchester, a leading government agency has been told. Leaders of the Northern Way - the body set up to work out how to bridge the pounds 30bn productivity gap between the North and South - have received recommendations that road charges must be introduced if the M62 isn't to become gridlocked within the next 15 years.

Clubs Urged to Give Smoking Red Card

YOUNG campaigners have called on Liverpool's football teams to banish smoking from their stands. DMYST, which is the youth arm of SmokeFree Liverpool, hopes to encourage football clubs to make all parts of their stadium, including stands, smoke-free. More than 8,000 people in Liverpool have signed the group's petition, which has been presented to officials at Anfield and Goodison Park.

Council to Appeal Over Ticket Ruling

LIVERPOOL City Council is considering a high court appeal to a ruling which could mean hundreds of parking tickets are invalid. On August 2, a judge ruled that tickets issued by wardens across the country, including Liverpool, did not carry the correct information and should be annulled.

Red Arrows Thrill the Crowds ; Atmosphere Was Buzzing As Thousands Attended Event

RECORD crowds turned out along part of the Wirral coast to see the Red Arrows perform as part of a massive fundraising event for the RNLI. The Hoylake and West Kirby Lifeboat Day has become one of Wirral's most popular events and organisers said it had surpassed itself once again. Around 40,000 people lined the promenade at Hoylake to see the spectacular airshow, as well as dozens of other attractions.

EVERTON FC has received a formal apology from the BBC after it claimed the club was charging young fans thousands of pounds to become mascots. Sunday night's Match Of The Day 2 programme repeated allegations that Everton had been asking for more than pounds 3,000 for the match day role.

PEDLARS who exploit an ancient law to sell their goods on Liverpool's busiest streets will be removed within weeks. A long-awaited crackdown on the use of "pedlars' certificates" to beat strict street trading rules will start in October, the city council announced.

THE conviction of a 53-year-old wages clerk for a pounds 13,000 benefit fraud has been hailed as another significant success in the battle against benefit cheats. Liverpool Council's Counter Fraud team estimates benefit fraud in the city costs every household pounds 80 a year and Maureen Maguire from Anfield is the 38th person to be convicted since April this year.
