CONWY THE SEMAPHORE LODGE, LLAN RD, LLYSFAEN
TRAVELLING on the Dart train from Dun Laoghaire into Dublin, one can't help but feel the Celtic connection on passing through stations such as Blackrock. The bilingual station name spells it out in Irish as Carraig Dubh, as near as damn it the same as the Welsh equivalent of Carreg Ddu. That shouldn't surprise anyone, especially now with Dun Laoghaire being a mere 99 minutes away from Wales on the fast catamaran ferries sailing out of Holyhead several times a day.
EIGHT years before he was to lay down his pen for the last time, writer Ivor Wynne Jones prepared for the moment he would be remembered among other lives past. With his usual efficiency, he submitted a summary of his background to the Daily Post's library, with the note: "The thought occurs that it might be useful to have the attached potted biography on file ready for my obituary."
In Need of Repair ; Mr Brocklebank
FOR once, the RC Archdiocese of Liverpool is not under fire for downsizing its property porfolio of precious churches. Instead, the Diocese of Shrewsbury is being censured by petition-wielding parishioners for plans to sell St Peter's and St Paul's, New Brighton, whose huge copper dome on the Wirral skyline garnered it the nickname of the "dome of home" for incoming sailors. The 1935 Grade II-listed church needs Elm of repairs. The diocese offers four options: 1) repair; 2) sell for redevelop...
HOLY Week is the climax of the 40 days and nights of Lent, as Christians draw ever closer to the Festival of Easter. It is during this week that we are again reminded of the betrayal of Jesus by Judas Iscariot. There are few people who would welcome being called a "Judas" with all its sinister overtones, though if a new book has its way, Judas is thought of in a very different light!
THE faint flush on Penny's cheeks spread under the soft curl of her lovely blonde hair to warm her ears like the gentle breath of a lover, as she considered the torment of those long, lonely nights. "I call it middle droop," said the writer of romantic stories and historical sagas.
LAST week, we asked: Should the weekly bin collection be scrapped? Education and awareness is of the upmost importance if the council want to encourage more recycling in Liverpool. People need to be made more aware of the wider consequences of not recycling; not just told that they have to do it, or maybe even face fines in the future. Most of us don't know how recycling really works or where it goes.
MERSEYSIDE is set to become the first force in the country to try to use private sector money to pay for new police officers. Chief Constable Bernard Hogan-Howe is trying to secure funding to help recruit an extra 200 officers in time for Liverpool's Capital of Culture celebrations.
Dr Steve Wooding, MD of Ice and Lemon coaching consultancy and training: "Companies should not be asked to pay for policing. If a company wishes to donate to the whole Capital of Culture event, and many have to the tune of six and seven-figure sums, then there should be provision in those funds already accumulated. This all should have been taken care of as part of the original Capital of Culture bid in terms of how we are going to cope with demands for extra police resources. This is closing...
ARIES 21 March - 20 April Your ruling planet, the fiery Mars, forges an amazing link with the planet of change Pluto, and as long as you aren't ruthless, you can make some major moves which will work out well. However, those people, or a person, who really don't share your vision could be most put out. Call to handle this...

'I SPEND quite a lot of time with lawyers," admits the modern- day Jonathan Swift, with the knack for both teasing and terrifying politicians. And it is easy to imagine Alistair Beaton arguing shades of grey with the legal department of whichever TV station he happens to be writing for at the time.
A COLD and prophetic creak visited my joints when I sat on the comfiest armchair in our conservatory to watch the sun rise on my 59th birthday. There I was in pyjamas and tartan slippers, clutching a mug of chapel-brown tea, and contemplating the future with all the confidence of a sadeyed trout, invited to write a thesis on the benefits of the non-stick frying pan to the suburban housewife.
