Pounds 41m Plan to Rebuild the Everyman Theatre ; Exclusive Historic Hope Street Venue to Be Demolished and Recreated

LIVERPOOL'S famous Everyman Theatre will be demolished and a pounds 41m theatre created on its current site. The massive project, which also includes a complete refit of its sister theatre, The Playhouse, has already secured pounds 6m of funding, and is now identified as the city's key arts priority.

Bailiffs Shut Doors On Radio Station

BAILIFFS have shut the doors on a Merseyside radio station after "persistent breaches of its lease". Liverpool's KCR 106.7fm, formerly known as The Rocket and based on the Huyton business park, has also been hit by broadcast watchdog Ofcom this month.

Row Over Alcohol Led to Boy's Death ; Court Hears Teen Left with Head Injuries

A SOMALI teenager was battered to death in Liverpool's Sefton Park after a row about Muslims drinking alcohol, a court heard yesterday. Ahmed Mohammed Ibrahim, 17, was attacked with a Samurai sword, bats, machete and a metal pipe on March 10.

COMPLAINTS about the offensive phone calls made by Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand to veteran actor Andrew Sachs last night topped 10,000. The complaints, made about Brand's Radio 2 show, involved a claim Brand had slept with the Fawlty Towers actor's granddaughter Georgina Baillie, 23.

FORMER tennis professional turned popular sports presenter Sue Barker visited the city yesterday ahead of one of the most anticipated events of Capital of Culture year. AN INQUEST into the death of the family killed in last week's motorway horror crash in Cheshire was opened and adjourned yesterday. The coroner, Nicholas Rheinberg, heard the Stathams were so badly burnt in the crash they could only be identified by dental records.

Tenant Who Stripped Out Metal Loses Eviction Appeal

A LIVERPOOL tenant who tried to strip his home bare of all metalwork - believing "microwaves" were damaging his health - has failed in an Appeal Court bid to stave off eviction. Top judges heard how Michael Bellis, of Hollocombe Road, Croxteth, pulled down the ceilings in his kitchen and living room in a bid to rid his home of the metal he believed was causing him a bizarre catalogue of health complications.

Shipbuilding May Return to Mersey in Italian Deal ; Alliance Bid for Mod Ships

SHIPBUILDING could return to the Mersey if the former Cammell Laird shipyard in Wirral and its new business partner secure a deal for another massive Ministry of Defence contract. Northwestern Shiprepairers and Shipbuilders (NSL) has signed an alliance with Italian shipbuilding giant Fincantieri, which is bidding to build six supply tankers under the Ministry of Defence's Military Afloat Reach Sustainability (MARS) project.

Culture Fund Appeal in London

A BUSINESS-backed fund to make sure the legacy of Capital of Culture year continues to 2009 and beyond is being promoted at the House of Commons today. The Merseyside Cultural Legacy Fund was launched in July by the Community Foundation for Merseyside. The fund, initially backed by Liverpool's Royal Liver Group, wants local businesses to contribute to an endowment fund to support grassroots arts and community projects.

21st-Century 'Street Urchins' Recreate Victorian Pictures

VICTORIAN photographs illustrating the lives of children in 1900 and 1890 have been recreated by Liverpool pupils. The children from Mab Lane Primary and Holly Lodge Girls School dressed in contemporary costume to recreate a famous shot of street urchins taken at the Steble fountain at the top of William Brown Street in 1890, and also a scene outside the Food and Betterment Association rooms on Lime Kiln Lane, in 1900.

THE NHS must prepare itself for tough times as the credit crunch takes its toll on all sectors of the economy, a health expert has warned. In a paper published in the British Medical Journal, John Appleby, chief economist of think-tank the King's Fund, warns that at best the NHS can expect funding to keep pace with inflation from 2011.
