THE Government is ready to intervene to support Jaguar Land Rover when the time is right, business secretary Lord Mandelson said yesterday. Speaking to the Daily Post exclusively ahead of the cabinet meeting in Liverpool yesterday, Lord Mandelson said ministers were discussing the issue and the Government was facilitating talks between JLR, banks and investors.

Sea Tragedy After Pair Lost Their Way ; Heroic Rescue As Friend Was Swept Away

TWO Wirral men were swept out to sea off Anglesey after taking a wrong turning on their way back to their holiday caravan from a local pub. Craig Craven, 22, drowned and his lifelong friend, Philip McWilliam, 24, was rescued by a volunteer coastguard in heavy seas.

DEVELOPERS and opponents clashed over the impact Everton FC and Tesco will have on traffic and transport in Kirkby at a planning inquiry yesterday. RUNCORN pharmacy group Phoenix UK is reported to be among the assets of Adolf Merckle's stricken business empire being put up for sale, just days after the German billionaire committed suicide. Banks are understood to be moving swiftly to sell the late Mr Merckle's Phoenix Group, which owns a number of businesses in the UK, including the Rowlands pharmacy chain, as part of conditions laid down by creditors in return for a loan.

First Casualty in Liverpool One As Bathstore Shuts Branch

LIVERPOOL One has seen its first casualty of the credit crunch, as Bathstore, in Hanover Street, has closed its doors. The store opened in September, 2007, and was one of the first to open in the pounds 1bn shopping and leisure complex.

Zavvi Shuts City Centre Store

TROUBLED music retailer Zavvi has closed one of its two Liverpool stores and is slashing the price of its stock as administrators bid to sell the business. Ernst & Young has closed 22 stores with the loss of 178 jobs.
