WE all remember them from our childhood. Mine was a wooden foot locker kept under my bed. But shoe boxes, tobacco tins, and, for the fairer sex, sewing or jewellery boxes and dressing-up trunks were all called upon to serve as the "secret" repositories for our most treasured possessions.

I'm almost embarrassed to say I still have some of the knickknacks I hoarded, but I won't embarrass myself further by sharing with you what they are. Suffice it to say they were (and some still are) weird, unexplained souvenirs from adventures to the beach or the countryside, or else a swap with a pal, the reason for why being lost in the midst of time.
