THE world's first traffic light was installed outside the Houses of Parliament in London in 1868. It consisted of a revolving red and green lantern and was designed to decrease the number of collisions between horse-drawn carriages.

Police officer William Potts, of Detroit, Michigan, USA, adapted train signals - with amber, green and red lights for street use in 1920.
