THE list of people who think a "Liverpool-only mayor" is a bad idea is long and distinguished - taking in Lord Heseltine, Sir Terry Leahy, Boris Johnson, Lord Adonis and our own council leader Joe Anderson.

Even Greg Clark - the minister who announced it yesterday - is known to prefer a "Merseyside-wide" mayor. David Cameron said there were strong arguments for the latter. However, the growing realisation that the people of Liverpool are being sold a pig in a poke has been trumped by the reality that it is too late to change course.
