IT WAS the glint of gold that brought the traders thousands of miles across the sea to settle on the west coast of Africa and name it after the yellow metal they hoped would bring them fortune.

For several centuries, the Empire of Ghana had been one of the most powerful in that part of the world, but that was almost 1,000 years ago and a newer empire was in charge.

The land had been inhabited for thousands of years, but that did not deter the 19th-century British settlers who imposed their own laws and customs on its people.

This continued for around 70 years, when - after widespread protest and a political battle - the Gold Coast became the first African colony to gain independence.
