1947: Britain gives up its mandate and the United Nations takes over supervision of Israel. 1948: The foundation of the state of Israel declared on May 15. Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan invade but are beaten back.

1956: Israel joins with Britain and France to invade the Sinai peninsula in Egypt on October 29. International pressure later forces the Israelis to give up Sinai and the UK and France to remove their troops from the Suez Canal.
