Arrest Those Backing Devolution Says Petition

Summary

CAMPAIGNERS have launched a bizarre petition on the Downing Street website calling for anyone who attempts to promote independence for Wales to be charged with treason.

True Wales, which describes itself as a cross-party, cross- sector body opposed to devolution, wants offenders to be punished with a five-year stretch in jail. The group claims the push for further devolution across the UK is a direct attack on the stability and sovereignty of the state which should be considered acts of sedition under the Treason Act 1531. Its e-petition, which runs until April next year and has attracted just seven backers. It states: We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to prosecute any person or organisation that promotes the break-up of the United Kingdom, including promoting independence for Wales or Scotland or reunification of Ireland, under the Treason Act 1531, which offence to be punishable by imprisonment for a minimum of 5 years.
