IT HAS been a difficult couple of years for Chiron's pharmaceutical plant in Speke, but today it stands on the verge of emerging as a saviour for millions of people at risk from a deadly bird flu virus.

The factory had to scrap 52m doses of Fluvirin, one of the world's best-selling flu vaccines, after a contamination crisis last year, and is curently awaiting approval from the US Food and Drug Administration to start producing it again for the 2005/06 flu season.
