THE traditional image of the real ale drinker is of the ruddy cheeked Uncle Albert lookalike from Only Fools And Horses who will quote you the ABV % gravity of a pint of Old Scrote while wiping away flecks of beer froth from the white jungle of his beard before bursting into a hey-nonney-no verse from Fairport Convention's Liege and Lief album.

But there's been something of a sea change in the past few years. Not only are more women drinking cask beer but the general age of the quaffers is getting younger too. If you're one of those lucky enough to have secured a ticket to next week's Liverpool Beer Festival - which was an instant sell-out - take a look around the crypt of Paddy's Wigwam and you'll see where I'm coming from.
