UNIONISTS say they have a "massive mandate for industrial action" after Merseyside council workers were polled over looming cuts.

As senior Sefton councillors identified savings totalling pounds 30m at a behind closed doors meeting on Saturday, the authority's three unions revealed that 90% of members supported a strike ballot.
