Summary
We have several secretaries working in a pool. One says we are under a legal obligation to allow her time off work to attend an opticians for an eye test, and we must pay the cost of the test and for any new glasses. Is this true On the basis the secretaries are working with a monitor and keyboard, the work will be covered by the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992.
These provide that employees have the right to have a free eye and eyesight test, by a qualified optician. Whilst there are no specific provisions that cover the right to take time off, it would be implied an employee should be allowed a reasonable period of time in which to attend an examination. This should be at a time that will cause as little disruption to the business as possible. The employer will pay for the basic eye test.See the full content of this document
