THOUSAND of people were forced to evacuate yesterday after the longdormant Chaiten volcano in Chile blasted ash 20 miles into the sky.

The thick column of ash blew eastward for hundreds of miles over Patagonia to the Atlantic Ocean, forcing schools and a regional airport to close.
