THOUSANDS of Catholics travelling to Rome for the funeral of Pope John Paul II helped budget carrier Ryanair to increase passenger numbers by 24% in April.

During the month the airline carried 2.66m passengers. Following the death of the Pontiff, people flocked to Rome from all over the world to mourn him and attend his funeral.
