CABLE company Telewest has been snapped up by rival UK firm NTL in a deal which will create the UK's second largest communications company after BT.

There will be substantial savings as the firm eliminates duplicated activities, although NTL chief executive Simon Duffy said it would not be right for him to speculate at this stage about how many jobs would go.
