AN INDEPENDENT inquiry into allegations of British complicity in torture was today called for by an influential committee of MPs and peers.

The Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights branded the Government's accountability on security and intelligence issues "woefully deficient", accusing ministers of refusing to give adequate answers to its detailed questions about torture.
