A GAFFE over urging people to pay off the credit card undermined David Cameron"s bid to persuade the country that the economic gloom could be beaten yesterday.

In his close-of-conference speech, the Prime Minister invoked the spirit of the British bulldog as he argued Britain must not become paralysed by gloom and fear.
