LIVERPOOL'S collection of pubs is one of the city's greatest glories. Even if your tipple is no more than mineral water, many of them are worth a visit, from the grandeur and international fame places like the Philharmonic to the intimacy of many a cosy little bar.

For many, the cosy little bar to crown them all is the Roscoe Head, on the southern edge of the city centre. No music, just good beer, food and conversation. No wonder it's been a favourite of the Campaign for Real Ale ever since Camra gathered pace in the early 1970s. The Roscoe even runs its own beer festival from time to time, and it was here that Eric the Fish caught up with John Pugh, described as one of the stalwarts of Liverpool Camra.
