What's the attraction? The best town walk in Wales, with castle and town walls to visit and - weather permitting - a chance to walk out on to Conwy Mountain. Where is it? Conwy estuary on the North Wales coast. How do I get there? By train, from any station on the Chester to Bangor Line, or by connection from Llandudno, or Betws y Coed. By car, leave the A55 and go into Conwy to the castle roundabout, then take the narrow road, the B5106 (Llanrwst Road); go under the narrow bridge, and soon after the road turns right, you will see a large car park on the right. How long does it take? A walk round the town walls and castle is about a mile and a half, but if you add in the marine walk and Conwy Mountain the walk will be almost 6 miles. Allow three to four hours if you include a visit to the castle. Allow a whole day when Plas Mawr is open. This is a great walk for young people; but it's hard work with a pushchair, and small children will need close control on the walls. Let's go.
The walk starts from the railway station. If you start from Llanwrst Road car park, you will need to follow Twr Llewellyn, the road up towards the town walls, until it goes through them (don't follow the under-pass). Immediately under the walls turn right, and there is the station. Between the end of the platform and the town walls you will find spiral stairs, which will take you up onto the town walls. If you come from Bangor on the train, you have to go out onto Rosemary Lane, left across the railway, and then take the steps down on the right onto the platform and walk to the end. Once up the spiral stairs, you can walk round the west and north walls of the town. The walls go steadily up to the NW corner. Here you can go even higher in a turret for a great view of the castle, the church, Plas Mawr, the three bridges, the estuary, and Deganwy.. Now go down the north wall, right to the sea. At the end you get a good view of the quay and castle and bridges beyond. Walk back to the first turret, and come down the steps to Berry Street.See the full content of this document
