FEARS of a spending slowdown in the run-up to Christmas were confirmed yesterday after a Confederation of British Industry (CBI) study said sales grew at their weakest level for over a year.

The CBI's distributive sales survey for the first half of December said a balance of just plus 8% of retailers saw a rise in sales compared with a year earlier.
