THE Tories -and Labour as well -grossly misjudged the national mood ab out Europe,but Michael Howard, the Conservative leader,got one thing right,at least: his description of the United Kingdom Independence Party as gadflies.

Because,as is well-known, the gadfly is a notorious bloodsucke r, and the UKIP managed to drain some of the lifeblood out of the three main parties, who seem to regard anyone who stands in their way as trespassers and upstarts merely playing at politics.
