THE Government has claimed it is "on course" to meet Chancellor Gordon Brown's target of cutting Civil Service jobs by 84,000 to release funds for frontline services.

There was controversy last week when the Office of National Statistics released figures apparently showing that the number of civil servants had remained unchanged for the last year at 570,000, despite Mr Brown's vow to cut staff.
