Summary
SOME say that, when the tuneful Puccini gave way to the rigorous Harrison Birtwistle, the art of opera melded into Musical Theatre. Something similar seems to have happened with the musical since the days of Oklahoma! and My Fair Lady. Andrew Lloyd Webber is often short of memorable tunes, but generous with spectacle and, as for Les Miserables, I was only persuaded to stay after the interval to see the barricade scene, fed up with the banal lyrics and trite tunes.
Listening to a CD set featuring the shows of Stephen Sondheim, I was surprised at how few memorable songs he had created, but his shows are never short of creative ideas. But they can be delicate flowers.See the full content of this document
