Summary
WALTER WELLER, former Principal Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, now takes charge of the Belgian National Orchestra and marks the occasion with a new CD of the attractive fifth symphony of Glazunov, coupled with his unjustly neglected first Piano Concerto. Here, the pianist is Queen Elizabeth Competition prize winner, Sever in von Eckerdstein. The orchestra is almost entirely made up of Russian and Czech musicians, such is the East-West drift even in music. The record is released on the Fugo Libera label, and augurs well for a good relationship with their new conductor.
After a programme of French music on the first release on their own KML label, Katia and Marielle Labeque now turn their four hands to the piano music of Igor Stravinsky. The Concerto for Two Pianos dates from 1931. It was written to be played by the composer and his son. I found it makes uncomplicated listening. Even more so are the selection of pieces for piano duets for children. Five Fingers and Ragtime for soloist are also here and the marvellous Tango for Two, as well as Debussy's En Blanc et Noir. Stravinsky met the Frenchman nine months before his death and formed a genial relationship with him. The Labeque Sisters have produced another superb recital and there is no need to be nervous of the Stravinsky name.See the full content of this document
