Summary
IT WAS with a slight sense of relief that Liverpool welcomed the news yesterday that its historic port had won the prestigious accolade of world heritage status. Unlike the Capital of Culture announcement last year, this, we were assured, was almost a foregone conclusion. We were told we were going to get it, the preparations had been laid to celebrate the announcement that we had got it, and a book to commemorate the fact was already rolling off the presses at its publishers in Barcelona. And yet, the unease persisted.
So the impact was very different when the word finally arrived. There was no punching the air in wild delight, no partying into the night, just a quiet sense of satisfaction that another major piece in Liverpool's regeneration jigsaw had dropped neatly into place.See the full content of this document
