IT SEEMS difficult to belie ve that Sunday trading has only been in force for around a decade. So embedded in our national culture has it become , that most people assume it has been in existence for much longer.

The Sunday shopping trip to the supermarket or garden centre is so much taken for granted that it is easy to forget that it was once a controversial idea. And the case of Mark Mitchell -the Christian car salesman who is closing his Wirral Mitsubishi dealership after he was told he must open on Sundays -shows that,for some,it still is.
