THE latest salary and benefits package for supermarket chief executive Sir Terry Leahy,in return for 12 months' work, is more money than most of us will see in our lives. It emerged yesterday that the Merseysideborn business executive will receive a bon us of pounds 1.98m, to add to his pounds 1m salary --a startling sum of money when stated baldl y. The timing is perhaps a little unfortunate, coming the day after Sir Terry's Tesco supermarket chain announced plans to trial a new policy under which workers who are off ill for up to three days will not receive sick pay.

One can imagine the knee-jerk reaction of those who hab itually deride "fat cat" executives for obscene pay awards.Indeed, we have often criticised,in the columns of this newspaper,huge and completely unmerited payments to executives at the helm of struggling organisations,often in the form of pay-offs,as they are put out to grass after dismally failing.
