BEFORE we start, a brief vignette. I was in the Walker on Tuesday, interviewing opera impresario Ellen Kent for the second time in a year (she's bringing Carmen and Nabucco to the Empire in September).

There to help was Angela from National Museums Liverpool. She'd suggested the Walker as a venue for a photo-shoot with Ellen because the gallery has two epic paintings that tie in nicely with her operas - Solomon J Solomon's Samson & Delilah (Nabucco's all about the Hebrews) and Murillo's Virgin and Child (a suitably Spanish masterpiece for Carmen).
