HARDLY a singer in the conventional sense (although that never stopped Shane McGowan), it was good to hear the distinctive notes of a corn bunting tumbling from the tubby little bird on the top of a hawthorn hedge this week.

The sun was shining, the hawthorn had fresh leaves, and the corn bunting obviously thought it was a good time to try his luck.
