THE great survivor lives to fight another day. Rhodri Morgan returns to the Senedd to take up cudgels once again as First Minister of the Welsh Assembly Government. But what sort of a government will this be, this concoction of strange people who couldn't even work together to form an ad-hoc "rainbow" coalition? What chance have we got of being governed responsibly?

The minority Labour administration must now prove its mettle in a new-look Assembly which has, for the first time, got law-making powers. Perhaps with the imminent exit of his nemesis Tony Blair, our First Minister will feel less threatened and more able to pursue policies and voice views which would have been anathema to the Prime Minister and his cronies. We want a strong, confident voice and perhaps we shall finally hear one which has not been tainted by Downing Street double-speak. Had Mr Morgan put more transparently clear red water between himself and the discredited but still vocal Blairites at Westminster, his party in Wales might not have received such a drubbing on May 3. Mr Morgan is an honest man and we have had enough insincere spin to last us a lifetime.
