On this day in 1277, Edward I accepted the submission of Llewelyn ap Gruffudd at Rhuddlan.
The Eifionydd man, descended from Ednyfed Fychan, Hywel ap Gruffudd, or Sir Howel of the Axe, as he became known, won fame during the Hundred Years War. He led a contingent of Welshmen at Crecy (1346), and caused so much destruction with his battle-axe at Poitiers (1356) that the Black Prince, according to John Wynn, gave the weapon a place of honour in his hall, ordering food to be served before it. He spent his later years as constable of Criccieth Castle.See the full content of this document
