SINCE the early days of military aviation North and mid Wales have been used as a place for pilots to hone their skills. With a population that is relatively few in number and widespread, plus its varied and challenging topography, the region presents the right challenges for aviators who need to be match fit for the possibility of real combat.

Propeller-driven fighters and bombers have long since been replaced by faster - and much noisier - jet-propelled planes. We have grown accustomed to the thunderous roar of RAF training jets roaring over the valleys and across the mountains.
