AST week, theWelsh European Centre in Brussels was assessing whether Wales would qualify for the next round of Objective 1 funding in 2006, after the entry of countries such as Poland, the Baltic States and Hungary into the European Union.

To the surprise of many,it found that we had slipped so badly in the European prosperity stakes, that even with these massively poor countries coming in, we remain below the threshold by which we can qualify for further aid. In other words, we will have the dubious honour of being, yet again, a member of the club of Europe's poorest regions.
