WELCOME to part four of my guide for bands wishing to build themselves a website.
This week and next, we will talk about the content of your site. Much as choosing good webspace, and having a good domain name, are important, if the content of your site is poor, ill thought-out and badly presented, you are unlikely to attract any visitors. Remember that the visitor is your only concern, and you shouldn't go far wrong. Also, remember that you don't need to be a graphic designer to make a good web site . In fact, many of the worst sites I have visited were designed by graphic designers whose only desire was to show off at every turn, with no concern for the needs of the visitor. Generally, people visiting your band's website will want to know more about the band, hear some of your music, see a few photos and -- maybe -- get to be part of the community of people who are already visiting your site. Always give your visitor what they want, not what you want. Write a concise biography that tells them who is in the band, where the band members are from, and about your musical vision and any notable achievements. Don't exaggerate. There's nothing more amateurish than a band proclaiming they're the best in the world, when their gig guide has one date in it at the local scout hut. If you have a friend who likes your music and can write a bit, ask them to write the biography; they'll have an objectivity about your music, and an innate sense of what it is that makes you special, that is more likely to enthuse your visitors than what you think is special about your band.See the full content of this document
