Summary

WHAT makes a Liverpool face? Is it a wry smile reflecting a Scouser's innate sense of humour or a windbattered complexion from the Mersey gales? Is there a glint of steely determination in the eyes borne from experiencing the city's triumph over adversity only to be sucked back into recession again? Perhaps there is no common denominator in the design of Liverpudlians' faces. Portraits in the archive of the Open Eye Gallery, charting around 60 years of local life, certainly focus on individuality rather than similarity, although that is usually a portraitist's job.

Those we are featuring here span the 1970s to the near present - the most recent taken in 2008 by Marseilles-based Philippe Conti.
