A BID to force the Government to speed up compensation to Equitable Life policyholders failed yesterday, despite a revolt by Birkenhead MP Frank Field.

The Government"s majority was slashed to just 25, when 18 Labour backbenchers - including Mr Field - backed a Liberal Democrat motion calling on ministers to accept a ruling by the Parliamentary ombudsman.
