An empty train leaves the goods line, bound for the back road at Bala Junction in November 1964 Frongoch Station, pictured in 1958, with the picking up post for the token in the foreground. The token system was used on single-track lines to prevent the risk of accidents, though this was not fool-proof as demonstrated by cases such as the Abermule disaster in Montgomeryshire in 1921 The railway route at the high altitude of Cwm Prysor (1,300 ft above sea level) was prone to severe weather, such as during the hard winter of 1947. Apart from the obvious problems, the telephone wires could break in the extreme cold thus making communication difficult, and in such circumstances the pilotman would save the day Bala Station, pictured in August 1953, was unusual in having a castellated goods shed The remote Capel Celyn Halt pictured in January 1961 The viaduct near Cwm Prysor, pictured in 1960.
