WREXHAM manager Den is Smith last night issued a hard-hitting defence of team captain Darren Ferguson after club owner Alex Hamilton pinned their financial problems on a lucrative contract the midfielder was given more than three years ago.

Hamilton claimed Ferguson's three-year deal, penned in 2001, cost the club more than pounds 1m in salaries and bonuses. He also accused the former boardroom regime of paying inflated wages to other players.
