PLANS to axe 55 civilian posts from Merseyside police to balance a pounds 2.5m deficit in the force's budget were approved yesterday.

But Merseyside Police Authority also voted to recommend a further pounds 1.86m savings to recruit an extra 60 police officers, who will spearhead a new anti-social behaviour task force.
