AS BEDDING plants are hardening off ready to plant out for the summer months, so aphids and other pests appear, intent on feasting on your colourful annuals. But the more beneficial insects you can attract to the garden, the better chance you have of keeping greenfly and other nasties at bay.

One insect you should not ignore is the humble ladybird, one of the major natural predators of greenfly. There are some 46 species of ladybird in Britain, belonging to a family of beetles called Coccinellids.
