Summary
p MANY chrysanthemums are still blooming or yet to flower in borders and pots. Keep feeding them with high-potash liquid fertiliser such as Phostrogen, Miracle-Gro or a rose or tomato feed. Use the same feed for containers planted up for autumn and winter display.
p TACKLE any neglected areas of the garden now that plants are starting to die down. Cut down and dig up brambles and pull up self- sown saplings of large trees -- sycamore and ash self-seed freely. When young bramble shoots emerge in spring, treat them with a systemic brushkiller. Two or more treatments may be necessary if fresh shoots grow. p WHEN browsing in garden centres this month, look out for the many modern varieties of Michaelmas daisy. They are more compact than older types, have bigger blooms and are disease- resistant -- and this month they are in flower so you can choose the colours you prefer. Good varieties are Crimson Brocade (red), Fellowship (pink) and Winston Churchill (purple).See the full content of this document
