I ONCE worked for a high-powered American boss who, when the Queen's birthday honours list was announced, lost no time sneering about the feudal system which Britain was still bogged down in.

Not wishing to suffer a career-limiting remark, but wanting to wave a small flag of support for the old country, I twisted my answer to simultaneously illustrate his own homeland's shortcomings while remaining diplomatic.
